Taking inspiration from experts in Florence

Taking inspiration from experts in Florence

In Florence, we have been working hard to prepare a project on climate education for schoolchildren.

At the beginning of May we traveled abroad again, this time to Florence. There was a workshop of the Teaching Green project, covered by the Erasmus+ programme. Together with experts from Cyprus, Italy and Spain, we worked on how best to educate primary school children about climate change.

The main part of the program consisted of breaking into small groups to brainstorm about climate change indicators and how to teach them practically in schools. It was in one of these groups that our collegue sat with a marine biologist from Spain, a university teacher from the University of Science and Technology in Nitra, and the head of the NGO INAK. Therefore, when discussing the indicator "Forest and its ability to sequester CO2", they focused not only on our forests but also on underwater forests and their incredible ability to absorb carbon dioxide, which immediately showed the importance of other perspectives on the issue. We just had to agree that when we talk about forests, we must not forget the seas and oceans, which absorb around 30% of all CO2.

Of course, our members didn't just stay indoors during their stay in Florence and spent a wonderful time exploring the city as well. Being there in early May meant that everything was in full bloom and beautiful scents were waiting for them around every corner. The city is an architectural and artistic marvel, breathtaking sights are everywhere you look, while the green spaces all around should be an inspiration to other great cities around the world.

Finally, a small warning. In just a few days we will start registering schools for this project, which will run for the next school year. We look forward to your participation.
